It was started in March by a woman in South Leinster and is campaigning for the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Ireland. She intends to follow it up with a broader campaign. The motivation came about with she and her partner of four years decided they want to get married but can't because they're both women. It's not exactly the first petition/campaign of it's type, and they have the usual things to say:
" -In truth, marriage is more than a piece of paper, it also acts as form of protection. It can keep a family together as they attempt to immigrate. It can mean the difference between sitting at your loved ones bedside in their final hours or sitting in the corridor. Marriage cant stop you losing a loved one to ill health, but it can stop you losing your children to Social Services after your partner has passed away....
Sexual orientation is one of nine forms of discrimination that this country recognises as unlawful. According to The Equality Authority of Ireland, "Discrimination is defined as the treatment of a person in a less favourable way than another person is, has been or would be treated in a comparable situation on any of the nine grounds." - "
She's aiming for 8000 digital signatures (there's just over 2,500 as of writing), and the petition is aimed at the Minister of Justice, Equality & Law Reform, Ireland, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D. Please take the time to sign it and pass the link on to others as well!
Thank you.
A big thanks to people who've promoted this around dA:
